Star Wars Fans Rejoice – Han Solo Carbonite USB Drive

We’ve got a select few readers who’ve purchased all the Mimobot Star Wars drives, and now they can expand their collection with the Han Solo Carbonite USB drive.

As SlashGear points out, Han Solo was suppose to be frozen for eternity but without encryption technology your data wont have that same possibility, so maybe it’ll escape just as Han Solo came back to life.

SuperSpeed USB 3.0 Version 1.0 Is Officially Available

SuperSpeed USB logoOn Monday the USB Implementers Forum released the official documents for SuperSpeed USB 3.0.  We’ve been reporting on the SuperSpeed for about 6 months and it’s finally come to fruition.  The logo to the right might be the USB-IF official logo as we pulled it directly off their press release material. What we have today is the specification outline, meaning we don’t have products yet, but now developers and chip manfucaturers have an official outline of how to build USB host controllers, hubs and other logic devices to manage the super speed of USB 3.0. The new specification claims transfer speeds of 4.8Gbps [Gigabits per second] rate which translates to a data transfer rate of approximately 600MB per second. So what next?  Well, between now and the next year, manufacturers will be in a mad rush to get Continue Reading

How To Format Any Size USB Drive as NTFS

If you take a typical USB stick and select the Windows format option, you only get the FAT and FAT32 option for anything under 4GBs.  However, there are times you might want to format as NTFS.  For example, you want to set specific file and folder privileges to the content and you feel NTFS is the best way. Well, there is an easy solution and it’s just a matter of setting the options correctly in Windows for your device. This is how you do it: Start > My Computer > Right click on the drive letter for the USB stick and select Properties.

Next click the Hardware tab of the Properties dialogue box and select the device which you’d like to change.  In this case, it’s drive letter F shown as “Simple Flash Disk 2.0 USB Device“  From here you can double-click the device or highlight in blue and click the Properties button. Dog & Penguin Laptop USB Cooling Fan – Great Look & Cool Design

No pun intended, but this laptop fan is cool looking with a great design.  The Dog shapped USB cooling fan is an ideal adition to those working from laptops.  With two 6″ built-in cooling fans, it can dissipate heat away from the bottom of your laptop and cool down the the under belly of your laptop.

Budweiser Beer Hides USB Stick

Ahh, Budweiser.  I could use a nice cold one right now, but I don’t think this USB beer drive is the answer.  First off, it’s not cold – which is how I like it. Clearly a promotional USB drive for a trade show give-away, this Budweiser stick is the first I’ve ever seen with liquid inside the plastic case.  Then again, taking just 5 seconds to think about this and review the picture, there is no way liquid is inside.  Rather that’s some nice looking brown plastic and fake white bubbles for an ever-so-real look.  How could this thing still have carbonation?

USB Finger Skateboard Makes Any Parent Smile

Interactive motion control games are definitely at the top of most kid’s lists.   The Wii was so popular we’ve got blogs about it, and last Christmas it was THE gift to give.  This year, another motion control game piece might be the hot ticket.  Actiga is announcing a full line of mini-motion controllers for gaming this fall.  Below is a picture of those hard-to-get finger skateboards, mounted on a pivot ball and connects via USB.

USB controllers will be available for both Mac and PC systems in versions that look like realistic skateboards, RC Cars, baseball, and a futuristic racing vehicle. Each of the controllers will connect via USB and will sell for $19.99. It’s not clear if the controller has games built-in like the plug-and-play devices for TV or if they are simply controllers to be used with other PC games already on the market.

SuperSpeed USB Spec Released by Intel

superspeed usbIntel released a draft specification for USB 3.0 or SuperSpeed USB. The Extensible Host Controller Interface or xHCI provides a standard method for USB 3.0 host controllers to communicate with the USB 34.0 software stacks. Both AMD and Nvidia voiced complaints earlier in the year that Intel hasn’t released update information to make the new spec an open industry standard and an easy path for transition. Today’s release is Intel’s answer to that request. Dell, Microsoft and NEC also support the release because the xHCI will expedite the industry transition to next-generation USB 3.0 technology.
One important factor in adopting SuperSpeed USB products is interoperability between multiple devices from different manufacturers. The xHCI draft specification revision 0.9 aims to make interoperability easier to implement, while also making it easier for developers to create software support for the market.
The next revision update is expected at the end of 2008 with revision number xHCI 0.95. So no SuperSpeed USB yet, but the big boys are working their way to it. Source: CRN. Continue Reading
