55 Portable Apps for Making a USB Super Stick
Update: This post has been amazing and generated a lot of interest. To make things easier, I have compiled a USB Super Stick for you. If you are interested in a 1GB drive with all the apps [below] for $20 – shoot me an email: gmo<at>getusb.info and I’ll send you more details.
USB flash is not (yet) a portable PC whereby any USB KVM monitor is your workstation – but it will get there. In the meantime, making the most of your USB stick and creating a portable software suite isn’t hard – you just need a little guidance. So… for you road-warriors or super geeks, the following list of 55 portable applications is worth taking note of. With 2GB, 4GB and 8GB drives readily available at extremely cheap prices, making a portable software suite and creating a Super Stick is quite easy.
When building your Super Stick there are numerous programs designed to run specifically from a USB drive. Best of all, almost all these programs are free, so put that Amex back in your wallet and let’s start downloading. Here’s a list of 55 of the most useful USB programs around.
Gefen Launches Wireless USB Solution Based On ExtremeUSB At Infocomm 07

“We believe this reliable and wireless method of USB extension will significantly enhance the way systems operate well into the future,” said Hagai Gefen, president and CEO. “Subsequent versions will also support multiple receiver hubs connected to one sender unit, allowing a same time distribution that delivers data real-time with no cables.”Like most of Gefen’s extender solutions, the wireless USB 2.0 extender uses small sender and receiver units connected to the computer and to the extended USB devices. No cables are needed to link sender to the receiver, which allows connection to cameras, keyboards, printers, hard drives or any USB 2.0 devices at distances up to 100 feet away. Continue Reading
USB Security Dongle for FileMaker
FMWeb School released a USB security dongle which ties in with FileMaker database solutions – USB Sentry. It’s like the database is hard coded to the UFD device. The inviting point about this solution is when a database developer sells the customs solution the USB Sentry insures unauthorized copies of the database are not distributed. You need the physical security stick to launch and install the database. Here is a typical scenario:You sell your solution to your client. They pass it around the office and email it to their friends. Suddenly you hard work is being passed around for free. You are losing money since they are only buying single copies of your software.USB Sentry is a USB security technology that allows you to distribute your database on UFD and ties your custom application to that UFD device. Your software is bound to that specific drive. Now they can no longer use multiple copies of your software since it will not open without the correct USB stick. Continue Reading
Porcelain Memory Stick
USB sticks have long lost the luster of the early days when it was cool to have no matter what they looked like. Today, most of the ubiquitous sticks look like the computers they are meant for – pretty darn boring. Why not change that a little and add some soul to a otherwise lifeless object.
Wireless USB Keyboard with Data Encryption
Wireless keyboards are a dime-a-dozen and sometimes the low-end just wont do. Wireless Computing turned their back on standard wireless keyboards and produced a high-end, commercial grade wireless keyboard that also carries 2-way data encryption technology for secure communication. Albeit not a common need of the average computer user, USB input devices like this make it possible for retail and commercial organizations to do business without sacrificing security. The RF-250 encrypted wireless keyboard can distance itself about 100 feet from the USB dongle and include a detachable wrist rest and [touch] mouse pad. Continue ReadingUSB Port on Cigarette Car Adaptor
If I where to design this product the ratio would be reversed. I’d create a 3 USB port adaptor with one cigarette plug. After all, I only need one car frig to keep my beer cold at the baseball games. But I do have an MP3 player, phone and camera I’d like to charge up while on the drive over. The Brando 3-in-1 car adapter with USB port is definitely a good idea. There have been several occasions where I’ve wanted one. UberGizmo brings up a good point – it might not be the best idea to daisy chain some USB hubs off the single port to power everything you’ve got. Might strain the car battery too much over a long period of time, none-the-less, an excellent item to have for those long hauls. Brando has them for $20 and ships to the US (and globally) very quickly and inexpensive. Continue ReadingBoom Box Plays USB Flash Drives
Kinyo is peddling some portable speakers that supports direct connect from a USB flash drive. The Kinyo portable audio player is designed to make your life just a little easier with the USB connection along with support of your popular music players like iPod, Zune, CD players and minidisc players. The USB boom box runs from AC adapter or from 4 triple AAA batteries with six equalizer settings to optimize sound in any location. I wouldn’t expect too much with just a total output of 2Watts, but might be a good must-have beach item. Continue ReadingUSB Powerline Solution from Icron
Icron brought us the ExtremeUSB technology making it possible to connect via USB from over a mile away, now Icron is bringing us USB over power lines. Not bad, not bad at all.
“We are excited to once again be able to showcase the flexibility of our ExtremeUSB technology. With the help of Panasonic’s leading edge HD-PLC devices, we have been able to quickly implement our platform to extend USB 2.0 over standard power lines.†stated Robert Eisses, President and CEO of Icron Technologies. â€With power line technology poised to be a major catalyst for converged home network solutions, we are pleased to be working with Panasonic to add USB 2.0 to that pictureâ€.In case you are scratching your head about the HD-PLC technology, this explanation might help: Power Line Communication (PLC) is a technology that uses power lines to both supply electric power and transmit data. Electricity travels in large, slowly changing waves, while data signals move in small, quickly changing waves. Since these waves travel at different speeds, there is no mutual interference when they travel together. This makes it possible to send data signals through power lines, and access the Internet from power outlets. Original Panasonic HD technology uses this principle to provide the large data transmission capacity and high speed of the HD-PLC Ethernet Adaptor. Continue Reading
Poll Results: Using Encryption On Flash Drives?
Well, to no surprise our recent poll results reflect the same results we found with our USB backing-up a flash drive question. Few do it and few use it.
Some USB Shiny-Shiny For the Flash Drive Fanatic
This is one way to hedge your USB product line from price corrosion. Design a slick alloy casing with diamond studded throughout and now that low-margin USB drive is generating a huge profit…and don’t kid yourself – there are plenty suckers who’d trip over themselves for this. (Although the chain is a deal breaker for me)~~~
Here is an $800 gold flash drive and the Swiss Army $6,000 UFD, Enjoy!
