Another lawsuit started by Microsoft

Is Microsoft after the smaller guys again? Today they filed a patent infringement complaint against Belkin, a peripheral maker, with the International Trade Commission. Microsoft is stating Belkin a supplier of cables and networking and other computer accessories, violated a Microsoft patent by importing/producing a product that allegedly infringes on the Microsoft’s U2 technology. The U2 technology enables peripherals such as a mouse to automatically sense whether a device is plugging into a PS2 or a USB port and connect to it. Microsoft said it currently licenses U2 technology to several firms, such as KYE Systems, Fellowes, Targus, Monterey International and Behavior Technology Computer and has tried for two years to engage Belkin in a licensing program without success. Microsoft attorneys indicated they are not seeking monetary damages but will seek to stop Belkin from importing relevant products until Belkin licenses the U2 technology, as required. Tom Burt, VP General Council for Microsoft, said “Belkin’s use of this technology without paying for it is unfair to companies who invent, respect and pay for this property,” in a statement issued Tuesday. No word from Belkin on this matter as of yet.
