ASUS USB 3.0 Netbook Out-n-About

We’ve been chomping at the bit waiting for a Netbook to have USB 3.0.  Last month we heard several models coming out while at CeBIT, but still nothing from the manufacturer websites.

ASUS USB 3.0 Netbook

Today SlashGear reported a new ASUS 1018P Netbook with USB 3.0 out-n-about.  You can see the bright blue connectors above.  To give you an idea of what the ASUS 1018P can do, consider working on a Netbook with Intel’s latest Pine Trail Atom N455 and N475 processors, with Bluetooth 3.0 and USB 3.0 connectivity along with the promise of 10hrs runtime. In addition [and this is good] the 1018P would come with integrated 3G, though there’s no word on whether that will be a standard-fit feature or an upgrade at time of order. The last bit of no-news I guess you could say is no word on price points and no word on availability.  All I can say is Continue Reading

USB Music Album – Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga is scheduled to re-release “The Fame Monster” on USB around May 3, 2010.  Although USB music albums are nothing new, it’s still a unique way to release music, create a buzz and provide hard core fans with a collectors edition memento.

Lady Gaga

The Fame Monster USB will contain over 800MBs of data and will include music, video and photos.  Of course all eight songs from “The Fame” will be there, including “Bad Romance” and Gaga’s duet with Beyonce, “Telephone.” Additionally, the drive contains nine remixes of songs from both “The Fame Monster” and “The Fame.” Lady Gaga will include her controversial short film “Telephone,” and will include Gaga’s single covers and new photos in a gallery. Pricing was not released, but that doesn’t matter Continue Reading

Review: USB Benchmark Software

Review: USB Benchmark software by USB Performance.

USB Performance has a nice USB benchmark testing program with lots of features besides read / write tests.

The USB performance testing software gives you the option to test at a File Copy level or a Bit for Bit copy level.  The difference with the File Copy is the process includes reading from the File Allocation Table [FAT] and thus slows down the process.  The bit for bit read/write tests will show the best possible performance your device will be able to obtain.

USB benchmark

Included in the USB benchmark software are some bonus features such as file recovery.

We all know with flash memory once you click delete, it’s gone forever.  Well the USB Performance software will recover those deleted files.  OR maybe you’ve lost data with a system Blue Screen or hardware crash, again the USB recovery feature should be able to restore those lost files.

Another nice feature is the backup function.  The backup function will create a single image file on your PC.  You can restore or backup the image file at any time.  This nice thing about a single image file [rather than copying all the files off your USB stick] is that you wont accidentally delete a single file or folder, you’d have to really be an idiot and delete the entire image file backup.

usb performance test

Other nice features include the USB typology layout and bad sector scan function.

The USB Performance software is free for download with no time limit or expiration date, however, it does miss a couple features of the full [paid] version.

Bottom line, if you need some quick benchmark testing, this is the way to go.

USB Power And The iPad – Don’t Freak – It’ll Charge

It’s fairly well known from user complaints over the weekend the iPad charges a bit differently then the logic used in our brain.  Here is the low down on the iPad USB power issue if you don’t feel like reading 20 paragraphs for these simple points:

iPad USB power

The iPad will power over USB ports with “high power” while in use.
  • The iPad will [obviously] charge when used with the supplied 10 watt power adapter.
  • The iPad will not charge over lower powered USB ports while “in use”  however, they will charge when asleep.
  • If the user gets the iPad message “Not Charging” you must take this literally.  This means the use of the iPad will equal the draw of power and only when it goes to sleep will it recharge…so it’s like a break even.

Cisco Simplifies Home Wireless Setup With USB Stick

Cisco is basing their new Wireless Valet product off a study that finds only about one third of US households are set up for wireless Internet—and that low rate of adoption is due in part to the complexities of setting up wireless networks. Cicsco is the leader in backbone routers, switches and networking gear, but have always been business enterprise focused.  Today that all changes with the Valet.

Cisco Valet Wireless Router

The Valet is Cisco’s answer to getting a simple wireless network connected for the non-tech people…and honestly, I think they are on to something.  Here is how it works. Simply power up the Valet and connect it to your cable connection in your house.  Then take the Cisco Valet USB key and plug that into each computer you want on the network.  Answer three simple questions, Cisco does the rest.

Cisco Valet USB dongle

That’s it.
Cisco says the Valets are so easy to set up that all users have to do is pop the included USB Setup Key in their PC or Mac, and the Valet software does the rest. Cisco says its Valet system takes the 20 or 30 steps normally involved in setting up a wireless network down to just three steps, and users can then move the USB Setup Key to additional home computers to painlessly get them up and running on wireless. Included Cisco Connect software then makes it straightforward to add more devices to the network (think iPhones, game consoles, etc.), set up a separate network for guests, establish parental controls, and customize security settings.
Cisco is offering two models of Valet routers. The Valet and Valet Plus. The Valet offers 802.11n Wi-Fi networking and four 100 Mbps Ethernet ports for connecting to a wired network.  The Valet Plus steps up to four gigabit Ethernet ports. The Valet is priced at Continue Reading

Turning iPhone Into Corded Land Line

Gizmodo posted about a new product which is a docking station for your iPhone which turns it into a corded land line phone. WOW…how times have changed.

corded iphone

Clearly two steps back, a dock station for an iPhone and it’s not even cordless.  But looking on the positive side, maybe the old timer middle management crowd can finally embrace technology of the iPhone without giving up their corded desk phone. It’s seems to be more of a concept phone.  Lets only hope.  What do you think? Source:  Gizmodo. Continue Reading

Beer Can Humidifier – Cure Hang Overs?

We all know that hang overs are caused from dehydration.  We’ve all [our loyal fan base] seen USB humidifiers powered by our computers.  Today I’ve come across the combination beer can and USB humidifier, which now begs the questions, could a humidifier help a hang over?  After all, it’s spitting out water all night long which you are breathing in.

USB humidifier

If it could only be that simple. The beer can humidifier appears to be a cool mist product, powered by USB and holds about 8oz of water. The Grunhaus can includes a timer to regulate the time in which you get your “treatment.” The Grunhaus Beer Can humidifier isn’t cheap [but cool] and comes in at $62. Continue Reading

Chat Stick – USB Flash Drive To Recover All Her Dirty IMs

Several weeks ago I reported on the flash drive which detects p0rn and today I’m letting you know about the Chat Stick.  A flash drive which recovers all those dirty Instant Messages. The USB Chat Stick is loaded with software which scans the host computer for all instant message conversations, deleted or not, and uses recovery software to localize all those discussions into one, nice, handy place; the flash drive.

USB chat stick

So here’s the obvious spin about the USB Chat Stick.  You can search a computers history for children IM conversations to make sure they aren’t sexting or worse, talking to on-line predators.  Or, for the paranoid spouse, a great tool to finally put your curiosity to rest – are they cheating on me? But from a business perspective, I think this has a lot of value.  For example, we spend many hours talking to suppliers overseas about flash drives, MP3 players etc and there are many conversation which get deleted away.  Import business transaction information that, one day, you may need to recover.  The USB Chat Stick can help. Here are the company’s talking points: Continue Reading
