The love for Linux is that with a bit of tweaking you can do just about anything. Case in point: Sven Killig took the Nexus One, loaded up some code to control the USB host controller and is now running a full work station.
Now this sounds awesome. Sven can run a digital camera off his phone, stream video from a USB stick to his screen or even run a printer off the USB port. Check out the screen-shot of his work station…
So if you’re like me, this project would be in the advanced level of Instructables for DIY mods, but thanks to Sven’s recording skills, we have a video to tell us how.
The best part of all this? He’s got the whole thing demonstrated for you on video, but not only that, you can hit up the down-loadable binaries from his website. And while he tried all of this on Android 2.2, which means its the only version of Android it’s been successfully tested on (at the moment), Sven believes that it will work on Android 2.1, too.

Make a custom USB game pad with an accelerometer for endless fun.
The concept for this USB tutorial is taking a game pad and adding some USB. Then putting in a small PCBA to enable keyboard shortcut programming so the device looks like a keyboard to your computer, but with specific buttons for game play.
The USB game pad can be used with nearly any software, such as a MAME emulator, game, simulation software, or for custom user interfaces.
We’ll start by turning the buttons of the game pad into keyboard buttons, so that pressing ‘up’ is converted into the ‘U’ key, for example. The firmware is easily adaptable, so you can adjust it for whatever software it will be used with.
Then we’ll beef things up by adding an interesting twist…an accelerometer. This will allow

So here is a new twist on the graffiti art, the facade printer. Technically, it’s not used for graffiti in the traditional sense, but rather a new marketing method for a different print medium. Buildings.
The facade printer is an inkdot printer which looks like a paint gun mounted on a portable deck. The paint gun is controlled via software and connects via USB cable. From here the facade printer uses stepper motors to control the firing position of the barrel and point the end towards it’s next mapped position.
Through this technology it is now easy to make a pointillism type image on buildings, bridges, or any large scale surface. I think this is a particularly interesting method for retails to promote products to the masses much like a freeway billboard. Visit the facadeprinter.org website to learn more or what the video below.
Wouldn’t it be nice to get 1GB of data storage for $1 on flash drives? We are not there yet but getting close. We are about $2 per GB for this 32GB Kingston DataTraveler.
It doesn’t come with the lifetime warranty we typically see, only a 5 year one…but chances are you’ll lose it before then anyway.
The c10 drive comes in four colors [Red, Yellow, Blue, Green] and has a full cap design to protect the entire stick. No word on performance, but the typical flash drive has a write speed of 5.5MB/s and a read speed of 15 MB/s, again not official just our experience speaking here.
Just 5 years ago I had a laptop with a 40GB hard drive, now we have flash drives just about as big and much less expensive. This deal is for a limited time at buy.com and has a normal price of $90.

Once again, I am off topic of USB, but sometimes you get ultra cool products that you must mention. Today I found a great gadget from our buddies at Gizmos For Geeks. It’s the Gear Ring.
Very elegant in design and intrigues the engineering in all of us. The Gear Ring is comprised of 6 mini gears which rotate in unison as you twist the top portion.
The product is high quality stainless steel and engineer to very tight specifications. This makes for an easy and smooth feeling as you twist the ring.
Although I’m not a ring guy myself, other than my wedding ring, it is intriguing enough that I’m going to buy one. It’s not THAT much, only $165. Ring sizes include 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9.

Designer USB flash drive pioneer Mimoco is excited to unveil its newest line of STAR WARS MIMOBOT designer flash drives. Devoted to the film that started it all – STAR WARS: Episode IV A New Hope – the latest series of classic characters immortalized as USB flash drives includes astromech droid extraordinaire R2-D2 and the shooting-impaired Stormtrooper – both back by popular demand from the original STAR WARS MIMOBOT series. Two newcomers also join the 2010 series, including that scavenger of the desert, the Jawa, and the fan selection from the first-ever STAR WARS MIMOBOT Audience Choice poll – Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi.
The completely redesigned Stormtrooper Unmasked MIMOBOT features a removable helmet revealing either Luke Skywalker or Han Solo beneath. Just as their “borrowed” uniforms provided perfect cover for the young heroes during the daring Death Star rescue, these Stormtrooper USB flash drives provide up to 16GB of “armored” protection for your digital life. Stormtrooper Unmasked MIMOBOT will be offered as a blind assortment character, with a 50% chance of uncovering either Luke or Han when the MIMOBOT helmet cap is removed.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock [like my neighbor], you know this weekend is the big release of the iPad from Apple. Well, to kick things off lets take a look at one amazing iPad Drawing App called “Drawing Pad.”
We’ve seen some of the authors work before, and for this new release of the iPad Drawing App there is no better way to explain the functionality and features, than watching a [very entertaining] video.
The iPad Drawing App includes an extensive pallet of paint brushes [two sizes], colored pencils, crayons, markers, roller pens, background paper and stickers [incredible clip art]. I don’t know the exact count, but it looks like the iPad Drawing App has well over 125 colors to choose from.
If you are anxiously awaiting your iPad to arrive tomorrow, go ahead and pre order the iPad Drawing App so it will sync immediately with your new toy. You can’t go wrong, especially when it’s already the 50th best selling iPad application currently available!
Cisco is basing their new Wireless Valet product off a study that finds only about one third of US households are set up for wireless Internet—and that low rate of adoption is due in part to the complexities of setting up wireless networks.
Cicsco is the leader in backbone routers, switches and networking gear, but have always been business enterprise focused. Today that all changes with the Valet.
The Valet is Cisco’s answer to getting a simple wireless network connected for the non-tech people…and honestly, I think they are on to something. Here is how it works.
Simply power up the Valet and connect it to your cable connection in your house. Then take the Cisco Valet USB key and plug that into each computer you want on the network. Answer three simple questions, Cisco does the rest.
That’s it.
Cisco says the Valets are so easy to set up that all users have to do is pop the included USB Setup Key in their PC or Mac, and the Valet software does the rest. Cisco says its Valet system takes the 20 or 30 steps normally involved in setting up a wireless network down to just three steps, and users can then move the USB Setup Key to additional home computers to painlessly get them up and running on wireless. Included Cisco Connect software then makes it straightforward to add more devices to the network (think iPhones, game consoles, etc.), set up a separate network for guests, establish parental controls, and customize security settings.
Cisco is offering two models of Valet routers. The Valet and Valet Plus. The Valet offers 802.11n Wi-Fi networking and four 100 Mbps Ethernet ports for connecting to a wired network. The Valet Plus steps up to four gigabit Ethernet ports. The Valet is priced at

GetUSB Dealz just spotted a D-Link RangeBooster for your laptop or PC for only $9. Sure you can take a piece of tinfoil and make a paraball and reflect your signal off the router, but where is the fun in that? Besides, it looks cheap.
So here is the dealz…the D-Link RangeBooster has a list price of $48. There is a $41 discount and Buy.com is throwing in free ground shipping. Net cost, only $9 USD.
Here is the company line:
ENHANCED WIRELESS PERFORMANCE
Connect to a fast and secure wireless network by adding the D-Link RangeBooster G™ USB Adapter (WUA-2340) to your desktop or notebook PC. Access your network’s high-speed Internet connection while also getting secure access to shared files, music, and photos from other computers in your network.
RANGEBOOSTER Gâ„¢ TECHNOLOGY
Built with RangeBooster G Technology, this Wireless USB Adapter delivers faster wireless signal rates and better reception than most other 802.11g devices. Having a faster connection gives you more time to enjoy listening to music and watching videos rather than spending time waiting for files to finish transferring. With better wireless reception, you can connect to the network from farther distances.
TOTAL NETWORK SECURITY
This USB Adapter offers total network protection by supporting WEP and WPA encryption. These features safeguard your data and privacy by giving you access to a secure wireless network.
EASY TO INSTALL AND USE
Set up the Wireless USB Adapter in minutes with D-Link’s Quick Setup Wizard. In addition, D-Link’s new utility detects available wireless networks so you can quickly connect to the network. It also keeps track of the networks used most often so that you can easily rejoin them. This Wireless USB Adapter is backward compatible with 802.11b standard, ensuring compatibility with a wide range of wireless routers and networks.

Victorinox has done some outlandish things in the past with respect to flash drives, including their $6,000 flash drive, and today they raise the bar once again.
Victorniox is offering £100,000 to any hacker who can crack their new biometric drive. Now there is a company with confidence.
But it’ll take one talented hacker to get the cash. Victorinox is running the hack challenge at their flagship store in London and hackers are given 2 hours to crack it and access the content stored on the disk.
The bio-drive uses a core technology called Secure Pro, which employs fingerprint reader with additional thermal and oxygen sensors to confirm that the pattern actually comes from a real, live finger. The USB stick also employs a single-chip architecture with 256-bit AES hardware encryption engine to minimize the chance of being intercepted on the circuit. As if this isn’t enough, any brute-force attempts will be dealt with by Secure Pro’s self-destruct mechanism, which literally fuses memory chip silicon beyond recovery all through the power of the USB bus.

How would you like to be heading up the marketing meeting where you name a product, “USB Porn Detection Stick?” Better yet, how would you like to be the QC team in charge of making sure this type of technology would work? That’s the job worth fighting for.
Dvice posted an article about a USB stick that does just that, it uses high level scanning software to detect images related to pornography. What I mean by high level, is the scanning software will even detect the deleted files. To be specific, I’m not sure if they are talking about the scanning software simply going into your Recycle Bin, or if the scanning software can actually scrub your hard disk for partial images, either way it’s an interesting concept.
Application:Â Best for corporations looking for a reason to fire their employees, over-the-top-crazy-girlfriends, and of course forensic teams trying to build a case against the kiddy porn sick-o’s.
MSRP is $100.
