LaCie Takes USB Key a Bit Too Literal

LaCie launched a new line of USB keys that look like, well…keys.  I’ve mentioned a key looking USB key before, but it was just a prototype.  Here LaCie made USB keys a real-deal and they look pretty sweet. There are three models LaCie has introduced.  The PassKey, IamaKey and Itsakey.

Engadget reports these guys also have microSD card readers, but I honestly don’t see where that is, but clearly a nice addition. Continue Reading

Make Your iPhone a USB Storage Device

What is more economical:  Buying a 2GB flash drive or downloading a $0.99 cent application to get 2GBs of free storage on your iPhone?  Don’t answer.  We know. MiDisk is one of those great iPhone applications.  The app gives you the ability to create Directories on your iPhone for storing files, documents etc.  It’s great because you don’t need the iPhone sync app – you can use the iPhone as a mass storage device. So how do you make the iPhone a mass storage device of 2GBs? Turn on the application (while in Wi-Fi), point a web browser to the link that it gives you, and there you go. You have full access to all information stored within this application. The information held inside the application is protected by a PIN number. To turn on access to the files within the application, your PIN number must be entered. You can also view your documents with the built in documents viewer. You can view image, text, PDF, and many more types of files. Wi-Fi is required to use this application. In situations where a Wi-Fi network is not available, if the computer supports Ad-Hoc, you are set. Store your information in multiple directories to keep organized. Easily remove and add new files as you need. Here is the step-by-step: Continue Reading

iPhone Custom Flash Drive

Gizmodo did an interesting post today, it’s as though they knew I purchased an iPhone over the weekend.  Yes, I’m part of the “cool kid crowd.”  Giz did a post on a new iPhone custom flash drive.  It’s a cute little thang, with two eyes, a red dot mouth where the home button is and two munchkin feet.

By pulling the top rubber lid, you expose the USB for connection.  No word on the price, but you can visit the site if you really need one. Continue Reading

USB Drive Is Double Take of DDR RAM Memory

USB sticks come in many different sizes, shapes and colors, but today is the first time we’ve seen a custom USB drive with the look and feel of RAM memory.  The Segon Turbo drive is another release from Brando on unique USB shapes. Brando claims it’s ingenious and exquisite, which I think is a bit too much on credit, but definitely a different look.  Too bad you can’t use the PCI looking slot to boost your real RAM needs.

The Segon Turbo drive includes a push-pull design for the USB connector making it a good portable product with protection to the connector. Some notable software functionality comes preloaded on the IC controller chip, such as:
  1. Security Manager
  2. Boot Manager
  3. Flash Mail Manager
  4. PC Lock Manager
  5. Bookmark Manager
  6. Security Folder
Available in a 2 and 4GB sizes, starting at just $12. Continue Reading

Ground Breaking 192GB Flash Drive – Don’t Be Fooled

Gresso Design has released a ground breaking USB stick with a total capacity size of 192GBs of data.  Sounds impressive doesn’t it?  Well, don’t get wet just yet – the number is really just 3 individual flash drives sharing a single case.

192GB usb flash drive

Granted the customized case from Gresso Design is unique, but to claim a flash drive is 192GBs when really it’s just a broken up set of three, is miss-leading. I think something along the lines of “USB case holds 192GBs of flash memory” would be a bit more appropriate. Even so, if you’ve got cash to burn these days, then drop $6,400 on this Enigma USB drive. Continue Reading

SanDisk Gives MacFanBoy Love With Secure Flash Drive

The Mac users usually get the short end of the stick when it comes to software and hardware support for the Mac OS.  Most products and applications are specifically design for the Windows user, knowing this is the largest install base of computer owners.  However, the tide is shifting.  I’m not sure if the popularity of the iPod and iPhone are the sole reason, or if users are just tired of the buggie OS of Windows but Mac computers are popping up everywhere.  Friends, work, school – well always school – and even my grandparents house.

Today SanDisk is giving the Mac Fan Boy a bit of love.  SanDisk introduces the first secure flash drive which fully supports operation under the Mac OS.  The SanDisk Cruizer Enterprise is a USB stick that may be used on either a PC or Mac and has the full ability for data encryption of the drive.  With a friendly user interface, the owner can unlock files and data on the stick for using and sharing.  Once the drive is locked down or disconnected the encryption is back on. True Puzzle Piece USB Drive

The US Branding Company has come up with a very clever USB stick which acts like a puzzle.  This is an excellent idea for promotional USB drives, as it forces the user to construct your company logo or brand before the USB stick can be used.

usb puzzle drive

The trick is to correctly configure the printed logo so the USB connector pops out when the puzzle is complete.  Think of this as the 1974 phenomenon Rubiks Cube but applied to a USB stick and obvious very simplified. The US Branding Co. has coined the phrase Rotating Puzzle USB and is available in a wide range of colors and sizes with print capabilities from single color to multi-color prints and logos. LaCie is Pushing Currency via Custom USB Drive

LaCie introduced their CurrenKey earlier this week which is a silver or copper USB key in the shape of brushed metal coinage.  The design is definitely eye catching, but not all that practical.

currenkey

Dealing with USB sticks day in an day out, having an odd shaped USB stick is the last thing anyone will want…or at least ultimately realize.  With the CurrenKey the round shape eliminates the use of other USB ports on the left or right.  Also, with many laptops these days the USB port is vertical, not horizontal, making the round shape impossible to connect unless you lift up your laptop or stack something underneath it. LaCie did a great job in design work with the metal die-cast construction, but lacks in overall design of usable shape. Continue Reading
