USB flash drives – Death of the CD?

USB flash drives continue to pave the way on how people use solid state memory. First we had the simple replacement of the floppy via USB thumb drive, then our beloved U3 platform for portable applications, now we see bands releasing music on flash drives. I don’t think we’ll ever see that from Compact Flash or Sony and their Memory Stick.

Keane is setting the trend by releasing a limited edition audio track, “Nothing In My Way” their third single from “Under The Iron Sea” on this ground breaking format – well not really a ground breaking format, but for the music industry, I guess you could say that.

So is this the first step in the death of the CD? Maybe, but I don’t think UFDs are the perfect replacement, the internet is still going to mop the floor on audio distribution.
