Convert Micro SD To A SATA Hard Drive

The obvious size difference and the less obvious protocol differences between SD memory and a standard disk drive have made it difficult to use SD cards as primary or even secondary storage on a traditional computer. Fortunately, adapters that bridge the gap between these two types of media have become smaller and faster, making it possible to use a collection of SD cards as a SATA SSD.

The 10× MicroSD to SATA converter uses a RAID 0 configuration, which increases overall system performance, read speeds, and write speeds. RAID setups link multiple storage devices together for better performance, and hardware RAID does not rely on the host computer’s CPU to operate. Available for $64.00, this converter is an affordable way to take advantage of MicroSD card performance in a desktop environment.

Notes:

Some usage restrictions apply to this converter. One of the most notable limitations is the lack of support when using 3, 5, 7, or 9 cards. Due to the nature of RAID 0, communication between cards must follow specific pairing behavior and does not function optimally with these configurations. Inserting cards one at a time beginning with the CHP0L slot and ending with CHP4H will help ensure the array is created correctly.

Additionally, the total usable capacity of the converted drive will be less than the simple sum of all MicroSD cards. When cards of different sizes are used, the smallest capacity becomes the effective size for all cards. Even with equal-capacity cards, some space is reserved to maintain data synchronization across the array.

Finally, changing the position of the MicroSD cards or removing an existing card and inserting a new one can result in data loss. It is strongly recommended to label each card to prevent reordering. The 10× MicroSD to SATA converter does not support hot swapping and cards should never be changed while the device is powered on.
