USB Mass Storage Mode For Windows Phone 7

It’s standard for mobile phones to sync and connect with your computer with limited or no access to the memory for storage.  As with our Zune hack for making a Mass Storage Device, here is a tip for the Windows Phone 7 as well…

Windows Phon 7 USB hack

The caviet to this tutorial, is that you can only perform the tweak to your computer which you sync the Windows Phone 7 device with. To get started, do the follwoing:
  • Open the registry editor on your PC by typing regedit in your Start menu
  • Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\USB; search for ZuneDriver
Now you will modify three entries (note, if you have multiple WP7 phones, you have to do it for each one)
  • Change ShowInShell from 0 to 1
  • Change PortableDeviceNameSpaceExcludeFromShell from 1 to 0
  • Change EnableLegacySupport from 0 to 1

LaCie SuperSpeed USB Stick Lives Up To USB 3.0 Spec

If the benchmark claim rings true, LaCie has a new USB 3.0 flash drive which is living up to the USB 3.0 SuperSpeed promise.  Things might be coming to fruition with the most recent product from LaCie, the FastKey.

SuperSpeed LaCie

The FastKey has print on the box claiming a whopping 260MB/s transfer speed.  If it true, this puts a single flash drive at a faster transfer rate than your best hard drive.  As EveryThingUSB points out:
“To put that in its proper perspective a typical 3.5″ hard drive has a peak read speed of about HALF of that and has an average speed about one THIRD of this little bad boy’s performance numbers”
So dumping your buddies MP3 collection of a 1,000s songs will be much easier with this USB 3.0 flash drive, then your portable USB hard drive.  But don’t think this convenience, and some would say luxury, come without a price.  The LaCie FastKey comes in a variety of sizes, starting at Continue Reading

64GB Will Become Common Place for USB 2.0

Samsung logo We have already seen USB sticks getting to the 64GB capacity, but it doesn’t go without some serious trouble or expense in making them.  Currently all 64GB sticks are made up of four 16GB NAND chips.  The drives are huge and far more expensive than a 1TB USB hard drive.  But this will all change… Samsung announced that it has begun mass production the industry’s first 3-bit-per-cell, 64 Gb (8 GB) MLC NAND flash chip using 20-nm-class processing.  In addition to the larger capacity, Samsung’s new NAND flash  will use Toggle DDR (Double Data Rate) 1.0 specifications, offering a 60-percent higher productivity level than the previous 30-nm-class, 32 Gb 3-bit NAND using SDR (Single Data Rate). Samsung’s chips are expected to arrive in USB flash drives, Secur Digital cards, smartphones and SSDs while replacing the current 4 GB (32 Gb) devices on the market. Samsung did not comment on time-frame; however the new devices may begin to appear in the market and offer 8 GB minimum and 64 GB maximum. Continue Reading

Tascam Solar Powered Tuner

Whether you are a serious musician or just like playing as a hobby to relax, chances are you have a guitar and a tuner.  As with most musicians your budget is probably tight or with the casual player you don’t keep up on the up-keep of your gear, so when your guitar is out of tune, you go for the tuner.  But most likely the battery is dead because A) you didn’t want to spend the cash or B) hadn’t played in so long, the batteries just went dead.  This is why the solar powered guitar tuner makes perfect sense. Tascam has done a great job with this tuner and thought about including a USB port just in case that tuner was stuffed in your guitar case for too long and you need a quick fix to get back in tune. Released just in time for the holidays and priced right [under $20] with a range of hues to select from: black, pink, orange, green, blue, white. Continue Reading

Intel Planning Some Native – Adding USB 3.0 Chipset

If rumors are to be true, Intel will be adding a USB 3.0 chipset to their winter 2010 lineup.  The Intel Developer Forum is expected to showcase an Intel Cougar Point chipset for desktops.

USB 3.0, Intel

For a bit, it was said Intel will forgo the the USB 3.0 chipset in favor of LightPeak technology, but maybe that technology has hit a bump in the road?  Odd to have Intel flip-flop like this…or wait, maybe not.Currently integrators are turning to a third OEM for the USB 3.0 like NEC, but the Intel native would help reduce expense of motherboard manufacturers and speed the adoption of USB 3.0 technology into laptops, desktops and tablets. WWWorks USB Steampunk Drive – New Kid On The Block

If you’ve been to this site before, you know we are a fan of USB Steampunk.  We just received word there is a new kid on the block who’s doing some cool USB steampunk. This design is coined “Steampunk Scorpion USB.”

USB steampunk Scorpion

WWWorks is the profile name over at Etsy and he’s done some nice work on his first release.  What I like about the style of this design is the lack of gears you so commonly see with USB steampunk.  Rather, WWWorks put some detail into the design on the brass. So here is a bit of detail about WWWorks.  Based in Budapest Hungary WWWorks is a computer IT guy by day and a craftsman by night.  Trying to break away from the Continue Reading

USB Steampunk With Wood Dash And Dials

I am a bit of USB steampunk enthusiast and today Etsy shopping put out a notice on a fine looking piece with a wood body and includes rotating dials.  Unfortunately I’m just an armchair enthusiast and have yet to build my very own, but one day – it will come. Some say this USB steampunk drive looks like Rosie, the house robot, from the Jetsons.  I guess the gear piece around the neck reminds you of the tradition maid outfit for a house cleaner back in the 60s.

usb steampunk

The designer mentions something about an old narrow bridge as his inspiration for the USB steampunk, but I think he’s referencing the piece of wood he probably lifted off the bridge which he used as the body. The design incorporates a gauge of some sort [no it doesn’t work] along with turn dials along the Continue Reading
