VolumeShield released their AntiCopy protection software which blocks PC ports from being used. The software allows a user to lock-down USB ports, firewire ports, CD/DVD writers and floppy drives. AntiCopy is available for free to personal users or Enterprise Edition for corporate users.

3,600 RPM mini hard drive from Western Digital is 6GB in storage capacity and appropriately named, Passport. With it’s compact size, folding USB connector and rubberized protective sleeve this seems like a good idea. Might be a little late to market considering there are 4GB flash drives for about the same price. A clear advantage for Western Digital are the re-write abilities of a standard disk drive verse that of flash memory, but even then we’re looking at a million writes before WD pulls ahead in that feature category. Prices start at $129 right from the WD website.

Crucial Technology adds Overdrive to their line of very successful Gizmo flash drives. The Gizmo Overdrive is powered by a dual-channel micro controller inside the USB enclosure to ensure high-performance data transfer rates – speeds up to 13MB/sec transfer rate. The Idisk acts as a bridge between mobile phones and your PC making it a seamless process to exchange data, sync and download content from your cell phone. Due out in April of 2006, A-Data and MSI have introduced a solar powered USB flash drive. Well, the solar cell contributes to running the LCD display to show remaining capacity of the device, now if this thing had a headphone jack for listening to MP3s, they might be onto something. Also seems the solar cells could become another item to break while being tossed around, but we can’t make that armchair judgment until GetUSB reviews one.

BOISE, Idaho, and FREMONT, Calif., March 8, 2006 – Micron Technology, Inc., (NYSE: MU) and Lexar Media, Inc., (Nasdaq: LEXR) today announced that they have entered into a definitive agreement for Micron to acquire Lexar in a stock-for-stock merger. Under terms of the agreement, each outstanding common share of Lexar will receive 0.5625 shares of Micron stock. Micron anticipates issuing shares in exchange for 81.6 million Lexar shares outstanding. Additional Micron shares will be issued upon the exercise of assumed stock options.
