Printer Cartridge USB Storage Drive – Great Hidding Spot

GetUSB.info reports on all many different USB hacks which take ordinary items around your house or office and turn them into something different.  Today we bring you the USB printer cartridge.

usb inkcartridge

This is a low tech project easy for just about anyone to do.  I wasn’t going to report on this because of it’s simplicity, but then I got to thinking.  This is a great way to have a USB drive with content you don’t want anyone else to find, hidden nicely in your inkjet printer.  At least for me, the color inkjet printer we use only prints black because we really didn’t need color and the cartridges are too expensive. The full USB hack is laid out really well at Instructables website, but it boils down to 5 basic steps:
Step 1 = Gather up your tools Step 2 = Break into the USB stick and disassemble the inkjet cartridge [messy] Step 3 = Clean everything out Step 4 = Position the USB stick inside the case [ink cart full of silicon] Step 5 = Button it up and use.
Considering the simplicity of this project, you also have a low budget, about zero cents. Continue Reading

USB Harmonica is 2GBs Of Sweet Soul

Backyard Brand is looking to coin a new phrase with their FlashHarp USB drive.  I’m classifying this under hand crafted USB because it’s a relatively simple mod of a harmonica to include a USB drive. Granted, Backyard came up with the idea, so props to them.

They do a good job of selling the concept with: “Even if you never master the art of blowing the harp, you’ll never have to throw this harmonica in the back of a drawer. Sweet gift for anybody, young or old, who really likes music.”

If this stick gains any kind of traction we can expect china to knock off a plastic version of this in about 3 months or less.  Granted, it’s not your typical custom USB drive, but for those looking to get the original mod, head over to Etsy and grab yourself a 2GBer of sweet soul for $44USD. USB Hack: Upgrade Your Prius With USB Port

In most cases, the cigarette lighter inside a car is used for nothing more than a charger outlet.  This is why Rosenberger31 updated his outlet with a USB connector.  It’s a nice USB hack. There is no data connection here, just a regulated port to provide a nice stream of 5v to your USB Powered Gadgets.

He removed the access door on the console where the 12v lighter was located. A Dynex 12-volt to USB adapter was piggy-backed onto the power lines and the USB connector was then fit into the blank accessory plate next to it.  What he didn’t mention was a much needed switch to insure juice wasn’t flowing to your USB device while the power is off. I think Rosenberger31 did a nice job on the dashboard mod.  What do you think? Continue Reading

How To: Make USB Volume Name Longer Than 11 Characters

By default the Windows operating system assigns the Volume name of a USB stick as “Removable Disk.”  However, there are times when you need a different Volume name…and many times the USB Volume name needs to be longer than 11 characters. Using the standard Windows “Rename” function, limits you to only 11 characters.  You can’t always get what you want with just 11 characters…so how do you make the Volume name of USB stick longer than 11 characters? It’s easy, with the help of an inf file.  An INF file (or Setup Information file) is a plain text file used by Microsoft Windows for installation of software and/or drivers. Today we are going to use the .INF file to increase the length of our USB Volume name past 11 characters. For those of you who are familiar with .INF files here is the meat of the answer:
[autorun] Label=type whatever you want here
For those of you less familiar with .INF files they are extremely easy to make and use.  For the USB Volume name this is what you do: Continue Reading

USB Tutorial: Turn a USB stick into a Hard Drive or Local Disk

This is a very valuable tutorial, especially if you are looking to partition a USB stick.  Another application for turning a removable drive into a local disk, is that now many software programs can be loaded directly to a USB drive.  The first program which comes to mind is iTunes.  I know you need My Documents and a Local Disk to install it, so after this tutorial, I’ll try installing iTunes and share the results.

The process of turning a USB stick into a hard drive is fairly easy.  However, there are limitations.  For example, this works best with Windows XP operating systems.  You also need to update the drivers for the device for any computer you are going to use.  Typically, this isn’t a big deal as you can easily do this for your work and home computers.  However, this isn’t a great solution if you are trying to create a partitions USB stick for distribution to many possible users [say trade show give-away].

Couple of items you’ll need:

  • USB_LocalDisk.zip files [download here]
  • Windows XP
  • USB stick

What we will do, is connected the USB stick, find the driver code, update the driver code and re-connect the device.  Simple.

Here are the details:
