PARIS, FRANCE (OCTOBER 6, 2009)
Today LaCie, in collaboration with world-famous designer Philippe Starck, announced the LaCie Starck Desktop Hard Drive and the LaCie Starck Mobile Hard Drive. The new products showcase more than just Starck’s iconic signature; there is an intellect revealed throughout each component of the design.
From Philippe Starck: “Technological genius explodes exponentially, each time with incredible power whose limits are yet to be known. The power remains, never abating, symbolically characterized by the sculptural magma that one attempts to cleave, to master within this geometrically perfect strongbox. A symbol of strength mastered, of freedom guided, of incandescent magma heeding to the form of its cast. The interpretation is free. But the mystery remains.”
Here is the YouTube video of the full interview with Philippe Starck.

LaCie nailed it again with their new USB speakers, the Sound2 Speakers. I thought their previous design was sweet, but this is sweeeeet.
LaCie teamed with Cabasse to produce a high quality USB Speaker product at a low price. With a Class D Digital Amplifier, magnetic shielding, a bass reflex system, and a 30W total peak system output, the Sound2 Speakers provide amazing sound quality. Cabasse’s own Wide Band Driver comes

The blogosphere has been talking quite a bit about the new LaCie USB key chains, in fact, I did a post just the other day about them. Well, yesterday LaCie sent GetUSB.info the iamaKey model. Here she is in the wild.
The iamaKey is a beautiful drive. Extremely solid, heavy and doesn’t scratch easily. LaCie put a lot of effort into the design and material selection to make one outstanding drive. I’ve used dozens of flash keys and most end up failing and in the trash. With the durability I see here, the iamaKey will last.
So here’s the deal…I’m going to keep the iamaKey on my keychain until it breaks. I use USB sticks daily so there will be frequent tests. I’ve also been known to forget my keys in my pants, which ultimately ends up in the wash…so there are many stress test opportunities.
I’ll report back when the device fails, but don’t expect an update anytime soon.

LaCie launched a new line of USB keys that look like, well…keys. I’ve mentioned a key looking USB key before, but it was just a prototype. Here LaCie made USB keys a real-deal and they look pretty sweet.
There are three models LaCie has introduced. The PassKey, IamaKey and Itsakey.
Engadget reports these guys also have microSD card readers, but I honestly don’t see where that is, but clearly a nice addition.

LaCie introduced their CurrenKey earlier this week which is a silver or copper USB key in the shape of brushed metal coinage. The design is definitely eye catching, but not all that practical.
Dealing with USB sticks day in an day out, having an odd shaped USB stick is the last thing anyone will want…or at least ultimately realize. With the CurrenKey the round shape eliminates the use of other USB ports on the left or right. Also, with many laptops these days the USB port is vertical, not horizontal, making the round shape impossible to connect unless you lift up your laptop or stack something underneath it.
LaCie did a great job in design work with the metal die-cast construction, but lacks in overall design of usable shape.
