Onion Powered iPod

So it turns out a white onion is not only good for salsa, but good for charging iPods too. Here is a video showing you how to charge an iPod with an onion, Gatorade and USB cable.

I knew those electro-lights are good for something. For those not interested in watching a 3 minute video here is the down-n-dirty:

  • put two holes on either side of your onion with screwdriver
  • soak the thing in Gatorade until most is gone (about 1 cup worth)
  • use the iPod USB cable and push in the USB connector into the onion.

Your iPod will then turn on and charge shortly there after. So for about 1 cup of gatoraid soaked into the onion will get you about 30 minutes of charge time.

Buffalo just put the call to action for SanDisk, Western Digital and the like for the world’s largest portable hard drive, the MiniStation.

I’m a big fan of portability. I’m a big fan of storage space. And I’m going to need to get some serious work-on to fill up the 300GB hard drive in addition to my standard 120GB HHD of my laptop. Not to say, I wouldn’t turn down some extra space.

The Buffalo USB MiniStation (HD-PS320U2) is just over $300 and comes with Buffalo’s 256-bit AES encryption security software and Memeo’s autobackup utility. After all, out of 300GBs there has got to be something worth saving. (more…)

Review of Tendon 6 foot DVI cable.

I had the opportunity to test one of Tendon’s 6 foot DVI cables. Video is critical to what I do for a living as I’m on Photoshop all day with a 24 inch Dell monitor and 20 inch Dell monitor next to that.

I’m very happy with the quality of the video image and the physical cable. The video is crisp with no ghosting or artifacts running at 1900×1200 resolution. The physical cable is distinguished from other makers by the fact that it has (more…)

Give Your USB Some Class With Exclusive UFD

11.25.07 | Flash Storage| USB News | Permalink

ZaNa Design is looking to raise the bar for classy looking flash drives. Sure we’ve seen UFDs made of wood, but not like this.

Using only high quality wood such as Merbau and natural Amber, ZaNa hand crafts each USB drive for 100% customization. In addition, the UFD gets further enhancements with stone flint - which if I understand things correctly - glow from the underlying LED during operation.

Not that my geeky girl would turn flush-pink at these UFDs, it does make for a good (more…)

Review: hField USB WiFi Extender - Conclusion: HOT

11.25.07 | USB News| USB Reviews| Wireless | Permalink

hField Wi-Fire Review

hField sent GetUSB.info their latest WiFi signal boost device the USB Wi-Fire for product review. Below are the details from our Wi-Fire review.

Wireless Local Area Networks are by far the least expensive and most convenient way to stay connected. However, using WiFi technology means we live with limitations. The biggest limitation, and most obvious from the term “wireless local area network” is the distance between access point and receiver. To that end, hField develops WiFi extenders to boost signal strength, increase connection speed and improve reception.

The hField Wi-Fire is a directional antenna with a highly sensitive receiver designed to increase signal strength and connection speed. hField includes their proprietary software which also aids in the optimization effort. It’s important to understand the Wi-Fire is not a wireless router, but rather an add-on device to boost signal strength on a laptop or workstation which is receiving a wireless router signal.

Have a habit of getting yourself in to a jam when cooking Thanksgiving dinner (USA)?

When things go wrong in the kitchen, sometimes you probably feel like running down to the closest restaurant and asking for some professional advice. Actually physically busting into a restaurant kitchen may be a little extreme, but thanks to a few websites like ChefsLine.com and Chefs.com, experienced chefs are connecting with home cooks via email and instant-messaging.

This hi-tech cooking assistance fills a growing need that has boomed recently due to the popularity of hobby cooking. Food TV shows, podcasts like Stump The Chef, and web sites are inspiring more and more people to try their hand in the kitchen. The only problem is… the average person doesn’t really know how to cook anymore.

So the next time you are wondering how to cook a frozen turkey in one afternoon or why your flourless cake never cooked all the way through, professional help might be just one IM or email away. But before you start chatting with chefs online, you might want to brush up on your chatroom and IM lingo. Think I’m overreacting? Well, ROTFL TAFN NRN L8R! AAB! (more…)

USB Putting Green and Ball Returner

11.20.07 | Useless Novelty | Permalink

There is no better way to show your boss how little you think of him and the paycheck he signs - than tee’in up a game of golf at your desk. And we’re not talking about Tiger Woods either, we’re talking USB miniature golf.

usb putting green

The USB putting green is a desktop gem with miniature balls, two putters and a putt returning 19th hole. (booze not included) Powered by USB port the mini golf green will start returning balls upon connection.

We thought the USB Whack It game and USB missile launcher was a little overboard for USB geekiness, but the USB putting green reigns as most useless gadget as of today.
